HK leader decries German asylum for 'bail jumpers' | Bangkok Post: news

(AP Photo)HONG KONG: Hong Kong’s leader has summoned the German consul to complain over Germany granting political asylum to a pair of Hong Kong political activists. Carrie Lam on Friday called the pair “bail jumpers” who were facing charges including rioting and assaulting police over a violent incident in February 2016. A spokesman for the German immigration authorities confirmed that two applicants from Hong Kong “received refugee protection in Germany” last year. Last year, Edward Leung, another independence activist previously barred from standing for office in Hong Kong, was jailed for six years for his part in the riot in the Mongkok district. Hong Kong legislators are preparing to debate, and probably pass, legal changes making it easier to extradite suspects for trial in China.
